Horse Safety

is key to having fun with horses.

Horses do not see the world as we do. They do not know how big and strong that they are, add to this the fact that they are prey animals by nature and this makes horses inherently dangerous! Not because they are normally mean but because they are normally more sensitive and skittish than humans. They communicate with their bodies as sign language not with words or logic.

Learning to Ride!

In Gilroy, California

Lessons or learning? No Matter what you call it, however you ride--Western -English-- it is all about BALANCE. In any type saddle, if you can easily stand up in the stirrup with a slightly bent knee and then hold this position while the horse moves forward or sideways; you will have the best chance of staying on. Why? Because you will be in BALANCE relative to the earth, TERRA FIRMA. The horse is always in balance with the earth, even when he is bucking. If you are balanced, and off of his back, that is not SITTING back on your pockets or not in contact with his back, he will move underneath you. You need to develop adequate strength to move quickly between sitting in balance and standing in balance to safely walk, trot , canter gallop, jump, ride a spin or rollback. Finding your balance, then strength building will keep you about as SAFE as you can be. ...This picture is Pickle, my OTTB, at Henry Coe State Park, Hunting Hollow.
